With resounding success: Beiersdorf's Research & Development unit won an award for its technology management from the Fraunhofer Institute IPT in 2008 – the only European consumer goods company to do so.

 

Basic Research: A Solid Foundation

Discovering and researching the effects of particular substances on human skin and developing new product formulas have been central to Beiersdorf's success for more than 125 years. Even the launch of Eucerin (1900) and NIVEA Creme (1911) were due to systematic research into new emulsions, closely aligned with dermatological research. This principle still holds true today, and Research & Development continues to be the source of Beiersdorf’s dermatological expertise and the high degree of innovation shown by the Company and its brands.

 

Setting Standards

Throughout its history, Beiersdorf’s extensive dermatological expertise and high-quality research have repeatedly led to the methods designed and developed by the Company for testing and evaluating the effectiveness of skin products becoming established as global industry standards. A prime example of this is the introduction of the sun protection factor, which permits a scientific comparison of the effectiveness of sun protection products. This was based on a Beiersdorf idea and quickly developed into a worldwide standard for this product category. The factor has been displayed on NIVEA sun protection products ever since 1975.
